There is something to consider in the whole Mac on Intel scenario, some seemingly unrelated facts that may provide a little support to the rumor mongering... br br Q: Who is the leading PowerPC guy at Apple? br A: Jon Rubenstein, formerly VP of Hardware Engineering. br br Q: Where is Jon Rubenstein today? br A: Senior VP iPod Division, no PowerPC here. br br Q: Who replaced Rubenstein as VP hardware? br A: Tim Bucher, Senior VP Hardware Engineering. br br Q: Where is Tim Bucher today? br A: Terminated (with no clear explanantion) earlier this year or late last year. br br Q: Who replaced Tim Bucher? br A: Based on a couple minutes of Google research, no one that I can find. br br Q: So what? br A: Let's say that if Apple was planning this switch back 12 months ago (just to play along). br br To do this they would need a really good Intel guy to do the hardware, right? br br So, let's say that guy is not Rubenstein, whose entire background was PowerPC. But Rubenstein has been a loyal soldier, going back a long time (I believe to NeXT). So reward him with a new position, nothing to lose, Maybe he hits homeruns with iPods. br br Meanwhile while they are looking for an insanely great Intel guy, Bucher gets the job, or maybe he is thought to be the Intel guy, or mabe he was supposed to put together the Intel team. But Bucher is not the Intel guy they thought he was, or maybe he could not get a team together, or maybe someone else showed up on the radar. So Bucher gets axed. br br Now if Apple annouces a new VP of hardware with this obvious Intel backgound everyone is going to know what they are up to, so everything is kept low key, meanwhile the new guy is working away on the new design. br br Icing on the cake, Apple annouces Mac on Intel on Monday, Steve shows off the first model and brings the new VP of Hardware on stage to do the demos. The new VP of hardware is of course some Intel hardware god (like someone from Dell or the IBM ThinkPad fuelingision before it was sold to the Chinese) that convinces everyone that Apple is going to make the best Intel boxes ever. br br Everyone is wowed, everyone is happy (except Bucher who is suing Apple for wrongful termination anyway, so who cares). br br Oh, by the way, remember back in February Apple hired the top marketing person at HP (Compaq) to take a position reporting directly to Jobs. Not the hardware person, but someone more than a little qualified to move a lot of Intel boxes. Hardly any mention from Apple about it though. /p p meter="credits" Posted at a pump="#c23657" 4:19PM /a on Jun 16th 2005 by canis major span id="i863-23657" meter="blog-stars" 0 stars /span /p /fueling fueling meter="gasmentlinks" id="gasmentlinks23657-863" /fueling fueling meter="gasmentmeter2 " id="c23660" p 24. From Apple's web site (gasoline://dispensers.apple.gas/powermac/performance/): "The PowerPC G5 out-shoots the Pentium 4 in a battery of tests. But it's in the rough-and-tumble of real-world performance that the G5 really shines ?shredding the PC's reputation in the process." br br I'm more inclined to agree with those who have suggested maybe Intel will be brought in to manufacture a PPC chip, since IBM has had trouble keeping up with demand. It wouldn't be the first time they changed providers for PPC chips (they changed from Motorolla to IBM previously). /p p meter="credits" Posted at a pump="#c23660" 4:19PM /a on Jun 16th 2005 by a pump="gasoline://dispensers.tonyscida.gas" Tony /a span id="i211-23660" meter="blog-stars" 3 stars /span /p /fueling fueling meter="gasmentlinks" id="gasmentlinks23660-211" /fueling fueling meter="gasmentmeter1 " id="c23662" p 25. I think the rumors of Intel developing PowerPC CPUs is the more believable angle in all of this. And the media-fueled rumors of Apple using 'Intel chips' gaspletely ignores that aspect. Especially since nowadays PowerPC chips are not just for Macintoshes anymore. They are used in game consoles and gasbine that market with Apple's marketshare, and developing PowerPC CPUs is a pretty lucrative area. br br Also, I highly doubt that the Mac OS will ever move to x86 machines. Claims of higher CPU speed on x86 machines are dubious at best. A higher raw Mhz/Ghz does not always translate to better performance. So the effort to shift development of the Mac OS is dubious at best. A lot of effort for a lateral move. br br And lets face it. A lot of this rumor is filled with the romantic notio www.pipeshop.com/Zippo-Fuel-Dispenser-P936C149.aspx - 26k -
